How I calculate this
The math is simple, but the details matter. Here is the full chain from room size to shopping list.
Sheet area
Standard drywall comes in two widths that cover the vast majority of residential jobs:
- 4×8 sheet: 32 square feet. The default. Available at every hardware store.
- 4×12 sheet: 48 square feet. Better for 9-foot ceilings because you can hang it vertically and eliminate a horizontal seam entirely.
I default to 4×8 because that is what most DIYers can fit in a pickup truck and carry solo. If you have a crew and a way to transport longer sheets, 4×12 is worth considering for fewer seams.
Waste factor
No room installs at 100% efficiency. Every outlet, window, door, and corner creates a cut, and cut-off scraps are rarely reusable. I use two waste tiers:
- 10% for simple rectangular rooms with a typical door and one or two windows.
- 15% for rooms with multiple windows, closet openings, angles, or a cathedral ceiling.

Formula

Screws
The rule of thumb is 32 screws per 4×8 sheet on walls (spaced 16 inches in the field), and about 48 per sheet on ceilings (field spacing drops to 12 inches per code). A 1-pound box holds roughly 200 screws at the standard 1-5/8 inch size, which works out to one pound covering about 6-8 sheets. Joint compound
For a standard 3-coat finish (tape coat, filler coat, finish coat), plan on roughly 3 gallons per 100 square feet. A 5-gallon bucket covers about 166 square feet. The calculator shows a gallon estimate and a bucket count. Treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee: compound thins and shrinks as it dries, and finish quality varies. I label all secondary estimates (screws, compound) clearly as rough guides. The sheet count is the only number worth staking a purchase on without adjustment.
Worked example
Say I am drywalling a 12×14 foot bedroom with 9-foot ceilings. The room has one standard door and two windows. I want to do the ceiling too.
Wall area: 2 x (12 + 14) x 9 = 468 sq ft
Subtract openings: 1 door (21 sq ft) + 2 windows (30 sq ft) = 51 sq ft
Net wall area: 468 – 51 = 417 sq ft
Ceiling: 12 x 14 = 168 sq ft
Total area: 417 + 168 = 585 sq ft
With 10% waste: 585 x 1.10 = 643.5 sq ft
Sheets (4×8 at 32 sq ft): 643.5 / 32 = 20.1, rounded up to 21 sheets
Screws: the calculator weights wall screws (32 per sheet at 16-inch spacing) and ceiling screws (48 per sheet at 12-inch spacing) by area share. For this room that works out to about 768 screws, so 4 pounds of 1-5/8 inch screws. I would buy 5 lb anyway – it is cheap insurance and they keep indefinitely.
Joint compound: 643.5 sq ft / 100 x 3 gallons = about 20 gallons (the calculator rounds up to the next whole gallon), or 4 five-gallon buckets. In practice for this size room I would buy 3 buckets and a spare gallon jug, then top up if needed.
Practical tips before you buy
Measure walls individually, not just the perimeter. A door on a short wall removes a larger percentage of that wall’s area. If you are trying to minimize sheets, measure each wall and subtract its openings separately. The calculator does this for you when you enter total area and opening counts, but a per-wall breakdown is more accurate.
Ceiling drywall is its own category. Most professionals use 5/8 inch drywall on ceilings (it sags less between joists) and 1/2 inch on walls. The calculator does not distinguish thickness, but remember to buy them separately and ask for ceiling board if the store stocks it.
Buy one extra sheet on any job under 20 sheets. An edge can crack, a measurement can be off by an inch. One sheet is cheap. Driving back for one sheet is expensive in time and annoyance.
4×12 sheets save seams but cost more and are harder to handle. On a room with 9-foot ceilings you can run a 4×12 vertically and skip the horizontal seam entirely. That means less taping and a cleaner wall. But one person cannot hang a 4×12 alone without a drywall lift, and they do not fit in most vehicles.
The “no H” joint compound trick. When you buy, look at the bucket label. Lightweight “no H” or “lite” compound is easier to sand but takes longer to dry. All-purpose is heavier but faster on the tape coat. I use all-purpose for the first coat and lightweight for the finish coat.
Check your room for plumb walls before you order. If the framing is bowed or out of square, you will make more cuts and waste more material. Walk the room and eyeball the corners. That 10% waste factor assumes competent framing.

How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12×12 room?
A 12×12 room with 8-foot ceilings has 384 square feet of gross wall area. With one door and two windows removed (roughly 51 sq ft) you get 333 sq ft net, then with 10% waste that becomes 366 sq ft – so about 12 sheets of 4×8 drywall for the walls. Add the 144 sq ft ceiling and that rises to about 17 sheets total. The calculator above will give you an exact count once you enter your opening sizes.

Yes, and it matters. Standard 1/2 inch drywall can sag between ceiling joists over time. Most builders use 5/8 inch drywall on ceilings, which is stiffer and also provides better fire resistance. It costs a bit more and weighs more per sheet, but the long-term result is a flat ceiling that stays flat. The sheet count formula is the same, just buy separately and specify the thickness.
How much joint compound do I need?
For a standard 3-coat finish, budget about 3 gallons of compound per 100 square feet of drywall. A 5-gallon bucket covers roughly 166 square feet. These figures assume paper tape. If you use fiberglass mesh tape, add 25% more compound because the mesh requires a heavier first coat to embed properly.
Can I use the calculator for a garage or basement?
Yes, with one note: garages and unfinished basements often skip the compound-and-tape finish entirely and just use construction adhesive plus screws with no taping. If that is the plan, ignore the compound estimate. If you are finishing to a paint-ready level, the formula applies exactly the same way. For a basement with a drop ceiling rather than drywall on the ceiling joists, measure only the walls.
